LINE Message Length - Are Long Texts Getting Left on Read?
LINE allows up to 10,000 characters per message. But send a 10,000-character wall of text to a friend and you will definitely get left on read. There is actually an ideal length for readable LINE messages.
LINE Character Limits
| Item | Character Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chat message | 10,000 characters | Per single send |
| Display name | 20 characters | Profile setting |
| Status message | 500 characters | Shown on profile |
| Group name | 50 characters | Group chat |
| Notes | 10,000 characters | Shared group memo |
| Timeline post | 10,000 characters | Public post |
10,000 characters is roughly 25 pages of manuscript paper. Technically you can send that much, but almost nobody actually does.
Ideal Message Length
| Length | How It Looks on Screen | Impression |
|---|---|---|
| 1-20 characters | 1-2 lines, small bubble | Casual, good tempo |
| 20-50 characters | 3-4 lines, just right | Polite but easy to read |
| 50-100 characters | About half the screen | Serious content |
| 100-200 characters | Full screen | Long but readable |
| 200+ characters | Requires scrolling | Too long, loses attention |
For casual chats with friends, 20-50 characters is the sweet spot. For messages to teachers or seniors, 50-100 characters strikes the right balance of politeness and readability.
Why Long Messages Get Ignored
| Reason | Situation |
|---|---|
| Takes time to read | Cannot quickly read on the train |
| Reply pressure | Long messages feel like they need long replies |
| Unclear point | Reader has to search for the main message |
| Notification cutoff | Lock screen only shows the first few dozen characters |
Tips for Shorter Messages
| Technique | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Lead with the conclusion | I was thinking after club activities today we could go shopping if you are free... | Want to go shopping today? After club |
| One topic per message | What is tomorrow's homework? Also what do we need for PE? By the way... | What is tomorrow's homework? (separate message for each topic) |
| Use stickers instead | Got it! Thank you so much! | One "OK" sticker |
The text reduction techniques work for LINE too. "Conclusion first" is the most important communication skill for emails and business chat as well.
Character Limits Across Social Platforms
| Service | Character Limit per Post | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| LINE | 10,000 characters | Private messaging |
| X (formerly Twitter) | 140 characters (free) | Condensed short text |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 characters | Photo-first |
| TikTok caption | 4,000 characters | Video-first |
| Discord | 2,000 characters | Gaming chat |
As explored in the history of X's character limit, character limits shape platform culture. LINE's generous 10,000-character limit creates a unique culture of "you can send long texts, but keeping it short is good manners."
Writing Messages That Get Replies
Most "left on read" situations are not about message length but about how hard it is to reply.
| Easy to Reply | Hard to Reply |
|---|---|
| Free tomorrow? | Do you have any plans tomorrow? If not, maybe we could... |
| A or B, which do you prefer? | What do you think? (vague question) |
| Got it! (signals no reply needed) | Got it! By the way, about that thing... |
Short messages with clear questions and limited reply options get more responses. This principle applies beyond LINE to notification UX design as well.
