Book Report Character Count Guide - From Manuscript Paper to Structure

About a 5-minute read

In Japan, book reports (dokusho kansoubun) have strict character counts: 800 characters for lower elementary, 2,000 for middle school. "I need 200 more characters" and "I wrote too much to fit" are classic summer homework struggles. Here is a guide to target lengths and tips for hitting the mark.

Character Counts by Grade Level

GradeTarget CharactersManuscript PagesCompetition Standard
Elementary 1-2800 characters2 pagesBody text within 800
Elementary 3-41,200 characters3 pagesBody text within 1,200
Elementary 5-61,200 characters3 pagesBody text within 1,200
Middle school2,000 characters5 pagesBody text within 2,000
High school2,000 characters5 pagesBody text within 2,000

In the national competition rules, the title and author name are not counted toward the character limit. The body text count starts from the third line of the manuscript paper.

When You Need More Characters

TechniqueExampleCharacters Added
Ask "why?" deeper"I was moved" becomes "The reason I was moved is..."+50-100
Add specific personal stories"I had a similar experience" becomes a full anecdote+100-200
Imagine the character's feelings"The protagonist probably felt..."+50-100
Write "if it were me""If I were in the same situation..."+100-150
Before and after reading"Before reading I thought X, but after..."+50-100

When You Have Too Many Characters

TechniqueBeforeAfter
Shorten the summaryDetailed plot (300 chars)Core only (100 chars)
Remove repetition"It was amazing. It was truly amazing.""It was amazing."
Reduce "I think""I think that... I thought that..."Direct statements

Text reduction techniques apply to book reports too. A common mistake is making the summary too long. Keep it to 15-20% of the total and spend your characters on personal reflection.
