School Essay Character Count - Manuscript Paper Rules vs. Digital Counting

About a 5-minute read

When your teacher says "write 800 to 1,000 characters," do punctuation marks count? What about the blank space at the start of a paragraph? If you do not know the counting rules, you might write what you think is 800 characters only to find out it is actually 750. Let us learn the correct way to count.

Manuscript Paper Sheets and Character Counts

Manuscript PaperTotal SquaresActual Characters WrittenNotes
1 sheet (400-square)400 squares (20 x 20)About 350-380 charactersReduced by indents and line breaks
2 sheets800 squaresAbout 700-760 charactersLower elementary book reports
3 sheets1,200 squaresAbout 1,050-1,140 charactersUpper elementary book reports
5 sheets2,000 squaresAbout 1,750-1,900 charactersMiddle school book reports

One sheet of 400-square manuscript paper actually holds about 350-380 characters because of indents and line breaks. When told "2 sheets of manuscript paper," aim for 700-760 characters, not 800.

Why Digital and Paper Counts Differ

When you draft on a computer and copy to manuscript paper, the character count often shifts.

CauseDigitalManuscript PaperDirection of Gap
Paragraph indentOften not countedCounted as 1 characterPaper count is higher
Line breaksNot included in countLeftover squares not countedAbout the same
Punctuation placementCan appear at line startMust go at the end of the previous linePaper is more compact
Number formatHalf-width digits (1 character)Kanji numerals ("three hundred" = 2 characters)Paper count is higher

Even if your digital draft is exactly 800 characters, copying it to manuscript paper might result in 820-850 characters. The difference between full-width and half-width characters also causes gaps, so leave some room before you start your final copy.

Understanding "At Least," "At Most," and "About"

InstructionMeaningFor 800 Characters
800 characters or more800 included, anything above is fine800 OK, 799 not OK
800 characters or fewer800 included, anything below is fine800 OK, 801 not OK
About 800 charactersAround 800 (plus or minus 10%)Roughly 720-880
800 to 1,000 charactersWithin the 800-1,000 rangeAround 900 is ideal

"About" is vague, but the general rule of thumb is plus or minus 10% of the target. "About 800 characters" means 720-880. When in doubt, aim for at least 90% of the target number to be safe.
